While the Nintendo Switch Not brand new anymore, buying one might be a smarter decision than trying to buy PS5 or Xbox X Series right Now. Admittedly, getting a next-gen PlayStation or Xbox is tough. But even if you have the opportunity, you might want to reconsider.
Spending your money going after the current console of your choice seems like a no-brainer. But what do you really want from a new console? I’ll discuss some of the best things about using a new console that aren’t really present in the new PlayStation or Xbox.
Nintendo Switch: What I love
For example, take a game library. The majority of the games you can play on the PS5 and Series X are the same ones that you can currently play on the PS4 and Xbox One. Moreover, a few of the platform’s exclusives might not inspire you. Meanwhile, on Switch, there are more than three years of releases to explore.
The variety of games available are the Nintendo credits. Naturally, your thoughts might be attracted to Mario, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda, and the like. These high-quality perks are good reasons to purchase this Nintendo console. However, you will also find a surprising number of great third-party games on the Switch. Highlights include the death And the The Witcher 3, As well as one of the best indie game libraries outside of PC. All of the next-generation exclusives on the PS5 and Xbox Series X are big-budget affairs, and many are either remakes or sequels. I won’t blame you if these profiles leave you cold.
While it is a good idea to chase higher frame rates and nicer graphics, that does not guarantee that you will enjoy the game.
In terms of hardware, the Switch has some major advantages as well. By all means, compare TFLOPs to maximum resolution output, and laugh at the meager GPU inside the Switch. But while it’s nice to chase higher frame rates and nicer graphics, that doesn’t guarantee you’ll enjoy the game. And if graphics are your priority, you’d better look at a gaming PC rather than a console.
Then, there’s the fact that the Switch’s less powerful devices allow it to be portable: an easily recognizable feature. I never would have considered this before buying my Switch, but having a fully equipped console anywhere is a luxury that cannot be overstated. Even if you’re in lockdown right now to prevent the spread of what you know, having the freedom to play games somewhere outside of my office helps keep the mental gap between work and home life from collapsing.
You can get the versatile Joy-Cons to try, too. These controllers have built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes, while still functioning similarly to a traditional gamepad. You can still play games as normal, but you can also try less traditional motion control experiences. You will not need additional accessories, such as the cost VR headset. I feel the Joy-Cons is much more comfortable to use than a regular gamepad, as you can use both halves separately, with your arms at your sides. It might not be a popular way to play, but it’s definitely the way I like to use it.
Nintendo Switch: What I don’t like
Let’s be honest about where the switch is beyond repair. The multiplayer and online jobs are, frankly, a mess. Some games require Nintendo’s Switch Online subscription service for online multiplayer play, but others allow you to play online for free. To activate voice chat, you need to use an app on your smartphone – a device that does enough already without needing to be a gaming party as well. It doesn’t bother me, because I’m a lone player most of the time. But going Switch might be a bad idea if you’re a dedicated player for Call of Duty, Fortnite, or the like.
In Nintendo’s defense, Switch is probably the best domestic multiplayer console, considering the Joy-Cons can be used as two separate gamepads. Up to eight switches with four players can also work together in the same space. Want a second console for Xbox or PS5? That would be another $ 70. Good luck combining enough displays and controllers into one space for a 32-person local PS5 / Series X multiplayer session without renting a community hall.
The Switch’s internal storage is smaller and slower than you get with Sony and Microsoft consoles. You get 825 GB of SSD space on the PS5, and 1 TB SSD on Xbox. The Switch has only 32GB of memory. However, Switch games generally take up less space thanks to the lower graphic resolution. And if you run out of space, you can at least expand the Switch’s memory easily with any microSD card. Compare and contrast with your expensive SSDs, you’ll need to add more space to your Xbox or PS5.
I think even the most dedicated PlayStation or Xbox fanatic have some good reasons to switch to the Switch, even once the next major wave of PS5 and Series X stocks arrives. Your decision certainly depends on why you are enjoying the game. If you like graphic fidelity, powerful multiplayer or are a dedicated fan of an exclusive franchise, you might not want to switch. But if different types of games – and accessing them outside of the living room – appeal more to you, then perhaps you should consider a Nintendo hybrid console rather than the newer Microsoft and Sony hardware.
